Physical assault

In Victoria, an estimated 2.0% of persons (100,200) experienced physical assault during the 2017–18 reference period. Of these:

• 46% (46,400) had the most recent incident reported to police
• 52% (49,600) believed alcohol or any other substance contributed to the most recent incident
• 47% (46,800) experienced a single incident and another 25% (25,400) experienced three or more incidents.

Threatened assault

During the 2017–18 reference period, an estimated 3.0% of persons in Victoria (153,600) experienced threatened assault, including:

• 2.7% (138,100) who experienced face-to-face threatened assault
• 0.9% (45,500) who experienced non face-to-face threatened assault.

Two in five persons who experienced threatened assault in Victoria (40% or 60,600) experienced a single incident, while 37% (56,600) experienced three or more incidents.
 
Of those who experienced face-to-face threatened assault:

• just over a third (36% or 50,100) had the most recent incident reported to police
• more than two in five (44% or 59,700) believed alcohol or any other substance contributed to the most recent incident.

Break-in and attempted break-in

During the 2017–18 reference period, an estimated 2.5% of households in Victoria (61,500) experienced a break-in. Of these households, 70% (43,000) had the most recent incident reported to police.

During the same period, an estimated 2.2% of households in Victoria (52,900) experienced an attempted break-in. Of these, less than one-third (31% or 16,400) had the most recent incident reported to police.

Theft from a motor vehicle

During the 2017-18 reference period, an estimated 3.7% of households in Victoria (89,000) experienced theft from a motor vehicle. Of these, 59% (52,700) had the most recent incident reported to police.

Malicious property damage

In Victoria, an estimated 5.8% of households (139,400) experienced malicious property damage, which was higher than the national rate (5.1%). Of these, just under half (49% or 68,600) had the most recent incident reported to police.
